CQ NEWS RELEASE (John Dorr, K1AR, Named CQWW DX Contest Director).
Richard Moseson, W2VU, Editor CQ Amateur Radio, sent out the following
on May 14th: Former CQ magazine Contesting Editor, CQ Contest Hall of
Famer and longtime CQ World Wide DX Contest Committee member John Dorr,
K1AR, has been named Director of the CQ World Wide DX Contest, CQ magazine
Publisher Dick Ross, K2MGA, announced today. John succeeds Doug Zwiebel,
KR2Q, who has been CQWW Director for the past two years, and who has
stepped down for personal reasons. The CQWW DX Contest is amateur radio's
most popular contest and may be the world's largest competitive sporting
event in terms of numbers of participants.
A ham since 1969, Dorr has been a member of the CQWW Contest Committee
since the mid-1970s and served as CQ magazine's Contesting Editor for over
20 years, from 1989-2011. He is also a two-time medalist in the World
Radiosport Team Championship (WRTC), a two-time president of the Yankee
Clipper Contest Club, chairman of the World Wide Radio Operators' Foun-
dation and has been emcee of the Dayton Contest Dinner for the past 25
years. John was elected to the CQ Contest Hall of Fame in 1997.
Professionally, John is recently retired from a career in high tech-
nology. He was also CQ's marketing director for several years in the
mid-1990s.
"John has been part of the CQ and CQWW 'families' for nearly four
decades," said Ross. "He understands this contest and the people who
make it successful - 'big guns,' 'little pistols' and behind-the-scenes
volunteers - better than almost anyone. He also has the 'big picture'
perspective of CQWW's significance in the broader world of ham radio.
We are very pleased that he has agreed to 'come back home' as CQWW
Director."
"I am honored to be asked to lead the CQWW and its incredible group of
contest committee volunteers," noted Dorr. "My sincere thanks to Doug,
KR2Q, for his decades of service to the world's best contest and its
participants."
Dorr's appointment is effective immediately.
