South Carolina Amateur Radio Volunteers Assist with Emergency Communication
09/16/2018
Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) volunteers from several South Carolina counties are pitching in to help support emergency communication, as the state deals with the aftereffects of Hurricane Florence. The storm, now a tropical depression, continues to generate heavy rainfall in the Carolinas.
“Amateur Radio operators are far from ‘amateurs’ when it comes to providing communication in an emergency,” ARES Richland County Emergency Coordinator Ronnie Livingston, W4RWL, said. “Our volunteers here in Richland County have been staffing stations at the Richland County Emergency Operations Center (E

Hurricane Watch Net Stands Down after Nearly 40 Hours of Operation
09/14/2018
The Hurricane Watch Net (HWN) has announced that it’s shutting down its activation for Hurricane Florence, now downgraded to a Tropical Storm but still “a formidable system that will affect the coastal states for days,” HWN Assistant Manager Stan Broadway, N8BHL, said. “Because the storm is moving inland, Amateur Radio activity will shift to the various state and regional emergency nets,” Broadway added.
The HWN operated on two frequencies simultaneously — its “home” 20-meter frequency of 14.325 MHz and its 40-meter frequency of 7.268 MHz.
We observed a return of sunspot activity during the past reporting week (September 6-12), with spots on four days, but not consecutive. Sunspots were visible on September 8-9 and 11-12. Average daily sunspot numbers increased to 7.6, compared to zero over the previous seven days.
Average daily solar flux increased from 67.8 to 68.6, and planetary A index doubled from 6.3 to 12.6, while mid-latitude A index went from 5.9 to 10.
The September 13 forecast predicted solar flux at 70 on September 14, 68 on September 15-22, 67 on September 23-24, 68 on September 25 through October 6, 70 on October 7-9, 68 on October 10-19, 67 on October 20-21, 6
