Saturday wasn’t too bad with the rest of the week being less than average. There was some 'lighthouse' activity with stations signing /LH and quite a few beacons signing /B. I could never figure out if the spotters work the beacon stations or just hear them and then spot them.
Most worked DX, 5I3B (Zanzibar in Tanzania), ZD7FT (St. Helena) and CX1AA (Uruguay).
There was also SB5RAFS/LH which I thought could have been a Royal Air Force group. But it wasn’t. It was a Swedish special group at a lighthouse.

Sun: Sunspot AR2859 is crackling with minor B-class solar flares.
Earth's magnetic field is about to be upset: A solar wind stream and, possibly, two CMEs are approaching Earth. A direct hit by the stream on Aug. 25th followed by near-misses (or glancing blows) from the CMEs on Aug. 26th could spark 2 to 3 days of polar geomagnetic unrest. That's exciting because the Arctic Circle is getting dark enough for auroras.
ARCTIC AURORA SEASON BEGINS: Last night in Oulu, Finland, just outside the Arctic Circle, Thomas Kast saw the first auroras in months. "The wait is over!" says Kast. "Lady Aurora returned graciously on Aug. 24th after the long, bright summer."
Footy: Stoke beat Notts Forest 1 – 0, our best season start for 20 or more years. I was there. The train, tube, train, bus, journey didn’t start well as Euston station was closed to my tube. But it opened by the time I got there. Otherwise the same as 18 months ago. Not quite so many supporters there but early days yet. We are equal top at the moment with a game against Fulham on Saturday who are also equal top. Could be on TV but I have a ticket so I’ll be there.
Those of us of a certain age (remember the 1966 World Cup) will mourn the death of Gerd Müller. He was a German professional footballer. A striker renowned for his clinical finishing, especially in and around the six-yard box, he is widely regarded as one of the greatest goal scorers in the history of the sport. A goal poacher.
Stop press! Stoke played Doncaster in the Carabao Cup at home and won 2 – 0. In the past the competition went on to have a number of different sponsored titles - from The Milk Cup to The Littlewoods Challenge Cup, The Rumbelows Cup, The Coca-Cola Cup, The Worthington Cup, The Carling Cup, The Capital One Cup and now, The Carabao Cup. And Stoke won it in1972, 2 – 1 against Chelsea. I was there!
And for those of you who don’t know Carabao is a drink. It is now Thailand's second most popular energy drink.
Test cricket is back on Wednesday with the third test against India from Leeds. Let’s hope for good weather so I can sit in the garden, in the sun with a gin and tonic and listen to it.
